My teacher would not let me sit past the second row because they25I would not be able to hear. People tend to speak26than nor-mal when they see my thick plastic hearing aids in my ears. However, my hearing disability has made me a stronger person. Because I wear hearing aids I have to prove that I am not27or mentally limited. I have to work harder and earn top grades in school to earn the28of my teachers. In shorts, I've had to run faster, catch better and score more points to prove I am not physically29

I don't fit in with people who are deaf and30as a way to communicate. I consider myself no difference from anyone else. And I am not "half deaf"with my hearing aids31; I can hear just as well as anyone else.

  四、阅读理解(共15小题;每题3分,共45分。)阅读下列短文,然后根据短文的内容从每小题的四个选择项中选出最佳的一项。

A few years ago it was fashionable( 流行的 )to speak of a generation gap, a division between young people and their elders. Parents complained (抱怨)that children did not show them proper re-spect and obedience (服从), while children complained that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually ,the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many critics argue that it is built into the fabric(结构) of our society.

One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity(机会)that young people have to choose their own life style(方式).In more traditional(传统的)societies, when children grow up,they are expected to live in the same area as their parents,to marry people that their parents know and approve of,and often to continue the family occupation(职业).In our society, young people often traveling great distances for their educations move out of the family home at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met,and choose occupations different from those of their parents.

In our upwardly mobile(流动的)society, parents often expect their children to be better than they did:to find better jobs,to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do.Often, however, the ambitions(抱负)that parents have for their children are another cause of the division between them.Often they discover that they have very little in common with each other.

Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap be —tween the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities.

No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature(特征)of American life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedoms and opportunities of our society, and in the rapid pace(速度)at which society changes.

All the housewives who went to the new supermarket had one great ambition (strong wish) :to be the lucky customer(顾客) who did not have to pay for shopping. For this was what the notice just inside the entrance promised. It said:" Remember, once a week, one of our customers gets free goods. This may be your lucky day!"

For several weeks, Mrs. Edwards hoped, like many of her friends, to be the lucky customer.

Unlike her friends, she never gave up hope. The cupboards in her kitchen were full of things which she did not need. It's no use her husband trying to persuade her. She dreamed of the day when the manager of the supermarket would come to her and said:" Madam, this is your lucky day. Everything in your basket is free. "

One Friday morning, after she had finished her shopping and had taken it to her car, she found that she had forgotten to buy any tea. She dashed back to the supermarket, got the tea and went toward the cashdesk. As she did so, she saw the manager approach her. "Madam," he said, holding out his hand,"I want to congratulate you! You are our lucky customer and everything you have in your basket is free. "

Hundreds of thousands of young children are being given mobiles (移动电话)by their parents against official health advice. One in nine five-to-nine-year olds has a mobile. This will rise to one in five in a year or two, making this the fastest growing group of mobile users.

A report on mobile safety says that while it is not sure whether they hurt users, children should not be allowed to use mobiles as much as grown-ups. This is because their brains are still developing and their bones are thinner, making it easier for mobile phone radio waves to pass through them. Mobile phone companies say they do not aim at under-16s, although some of their mobiles are designed to interest younger children.

Many of the mobiles are paid for as a safety measure so that the child can always call a parent when necessary. However, when children see that their friends have a mobile,it can become popular among them.

Professor Colin at Oxford University, who studies mobile phone radio waves, told BBC News:

"It's new technology(技术) and the science is still developing. We have to be very careful about children--if there are any effects they would hurt young children more than grown-ups. " He suggested that children should be encouraged to use text messages rather than spoken conversations, as this would reduce the amount of radio waves greatly.

  根据以上内容,回答下面试题.

第44题单选 ( ) Which age group of mobile users is increasing fastest?

  A.From 1 to 5.

  B.From 5 to 9.

A.They make mobiles for those over 16.

B.They don't serve those who are under 16.

第46题单选 ( )According to Professor Colin, which of the following is TRUE?

A.Reducing radio waves is a hard task for scientists.

B.Children should not be allowed to use mobiles.

Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father, "But, Dad, you can't be healthy if you're dead. "

Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt--a mistake 75% of the US population make every day. The big question is why.

There have been many myths about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago. The following are three of the most common.

Myth Number One:It's best to be "thrown clear" of a serious accident.

Truth :Sorry, but any accident serious enough to "throw you clear" is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are you'll have travelled through a windshield(挡风玻璃) or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater in cases where people are "thrown clear. "

Myth Number Two:Safety belts "trap" people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.

Truth:Sony again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious(昏迷) due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situation, not to be trapped in them.

Myth Number Three:Safety belts aren't needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour(mph).

Truth:When two cars travelling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters.
